900 Years of Treasured People and Possessions in Peterborough

Our director Amina Chitembo had the privilege of featuring in a special exhibition, ‘Treasured People and Possessions’. A project which is part of the celebrating 900 years of the rich heritage of the city of Peterborough, UK and its citizens. The three months long exhibition features photos and treasured objects from people who have lived in the city for over 900 years. It includes a special three months exhibition featuring eight portraits of notable current residents who share their stories and their treasured possessions.

As someone who came from outside the UK and has chosen to be a current resident of the vibrant city of Peterborough, Amina had the opportunity to honour her homeland, Zambia. She shared her treasured possessions which are:

  • A 50th Independence chitenge material, a multipurpose cloth used for clothing, cradling babies and much more
  • A Zambian map shaped clock which features the Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world.
  • A selection of books she has written/edited and published through her company Diverse Cultures Publishing.

Amina had this to say: “my artefacts hold a special place in my house in reminding me of my origins, my books are a constant reminder that with hard work you can be who you want to be regardless of where you live in the world. I believe that we live in a global world and Migration is exciting to me, that is why I write about it. It is important for our children to know where they come from and show them both cultures.”

The history-making exhibition is in the Museum and Art Gallery managed by Vivacity

Amina is an author, publisher and leadership development, diversity and inclusion Coach and trainer. She is the founder of Diverse Cultures Advice and Coaching, and she is proud to be a resident of Peterborough, a city that has grown from a small market town to a city that is vibrant and celebrates Diversity and Inclusion.

The portraits were taken by local photographer Nisha Keshav.

The exhibition runs from 16 February – 30 June 2019, 10am-4: 45 pm, excluding Mondays.
